Notice of the Annual General Meeting of:
The Dinghy Cruising Association
Saturday March 27th
10:30am - 5pm
Guest speaker James Wharram
In the mid 50's, based on his research into ancient Polynesian boat design, James Wharram built the
first off-shore Catamaran in Britain and sailed it out into the Atlantic. While the world's yachting
community were busy dismissing such a design as a worthy sea-going vessel, James was landing
his 23'6" 'Double Hulled Canoe' in the West Indies. There he built a second 40' Polynesian style
Catamaran and sailed it back to the UK accompanied by two young German girls, being the first to
sail a catamaran across the North Atlantic These amazing Trans-Atlantic crossings and the follow up
book "Two Girls, Two Catamarans" has etched the name 'James Wharram' into the annals of
yachting history.
Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club, Chew Stoke, Somerset.
Chew Valley Lake is set in attractive countyside on the northern edge of the Mendip hills,
eight miles south of Bristol. Visiting DCA boats can go out sailing over the weekend.
From M5 southbound. Journey time from M5 J18 to CVLSC – 30 minutes:
Turn off the M5 at junction 18, signposted Bristol Airport and A4.
Follow the A4 along the side of the River Avon.
Pass under the Clifton Suspension Bridge and then take the right-hand fork up onto the flyover,
signposted Bristol Airport A38. This will take you over the concrete
swing bridge that
spans the entrance to Bristol City Docks.
Take the second turning off the flyover signposted Taunton and A38.
Continue following signs for the A38. Approximately two miles into the countryside the road goes into a dip.
Then the road rises. Just after the end of a short stretch of dual carriageway, take a left hand turning
signposted Chew Magna and Winford.
Follow this road, passing through Winford, for approximately four miles.
You will come to a roundabout at which you should turn right towards Chew Stoke.
Turn right at the T junction in the village.
Once you pass the Garage in Chew Stoke, turn left (signposted Chew Valley Lake) and
proceed for half a mile until you see the entrance to Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club on the right.
Lifts can be arranged from Bristol Temple Meads station, if you give Roger Barnes enough warning.
If you have a satnav, BS40 8XN will give you the location.
